The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd[a] is a role-playing video game developed by Nihon Falcom. The game is a part of the Trails series, itself a part of the larger The Legend of Heroes series, and serves as the final entry of the Trails in the Sky sub-trilogy. Initially released in Japan in 2007 for Microsoft Windows, and later for the PlayStation Portable. The game did not see an English release until 2017 due to the game's large amount of text necessary to translate and localize. A high-definition port to the PlayStation 3 was released in 2013, while a remaster for the PlayStation Vita was released in 2016; both were only released in Japan.
Gameplay[edit]
The game plays similarly to its predecessors, being a role-playing video game with turn-based battles, but this time enemies have affinities to the three higher elements of time, space and mirage. Other additions are the turn bonuses of 'rush', allowing the player to take two actions at once, 'guard', which nullifies any damage, 'vanish', which makes a target disappear for a few turns, and 'death', which gives the attack the effect of an instant death. Throughout the games' dungeons the player will find doors engraved with symbols of the moon, stars and the sun, which trigger, respectively, long story scenes, short story scenes, and mini-games. Those scenes usually tell the story of past events and may feature battles.
Save data from the Windows, PSP, and PS3 versions of Second Chapter unlock bonus content when playing the 3rd.[1] Additionally, save data for the 3rd is transferable from the PSP to the PS3, allowing the player to continue where they had left off.[1]
Plot[edit]
Taking place six months following the ending of Trails in the Sky SC, the main protagonist of the 3rd is high-ranking Septian Church agent Kevin Graham. The game begins with Kevin infiltrating a party hosted aboard the airship Lusitania. He is on a mission to retrieve an artifact and apprehend its current owner. While on the mission, a mysterious masked man observes him from the shadows unbeknownst to Kevin. Kevin succeeds in his mission.
Kevin is dispatched on a second mission to recover another mysterious artifact from the bottom of Valeria Lake in Liberl Kingdom, which was placed there following the events of SC. He meets with Lieutenant Colonel Cid and Erika Russell, Tita Russell's mother. He discovers the artifact to be a cube shaped object. In the process, he is reunited with Ries Argent, fellow church knight and an old friend of his. After securing custody of the artifact, Kevin and Ries notice someone spying on them, who is revealed to be Gilbert, a low ranking member of Ouroboros. After defeating Gilbert and his remote piloted helicopter, the Cube starts to emit a mysterious glow. At this point, a mysterious white haired man wearing a black suit of armor and a mask (known then as the Man in Black) appears and addresses the two. Afterwards, Kevin, Ries, and Gilbert are enveloped by a bright light coming from the Cube.
Kevin and Ries awaken to find themselves in an otherworldly dimension - Phantasma, the Land of Shadows, a place that seems to follow its own otherworldly rules. Thus, they begin their investigation to learn what Phantasma is and how they can escape it. The two repeatedly encounter the Man in Black, who identifies himself as Schwarzritter. He says that the ruler of Phantasma is known as the 'Lord of Phantasma' (the masked man seen in the prologue of the game). Along the way, Kevin and Ries come across yellow crystals which are revealed to be sealing stones. A disembodied voice directs the two to bring any sealing stones they find back to the main area of Phantasma known as the Hermit's Garden. They discover that they can use the Cube to warp to places in Phantasma that they have previously visited. Bringing the first stealing stone back to the Hermit's Garden, they find that it contains Tita. It turns out that Tita has also been dragged into Phantasma against her will, and she decides to aid Kevin and Ries. As the game progresses, the protagonists find more sealing stones which contain more playable characters from the previous two games (Estelle, Joshua, Schera, Olivier, Agate, Zin, Kloe, Josette, Mueller, Julia, and Anelace). They also find Gilbert in various comedic situations.
As the party progresses deeper into Phantasma (which contains seven planes), they find that some planes are recreations of places they have been to such as Grancel City. Eventually, the party, following guidance from the disembodied voice, finds a sealing stone that is silver in colour. Bringing it back to the Hermit's Garden, they discover that the silver sealing stone contains the source of the disembodied voice, the true ruler of Phantasma, Celeste D. Auslese, Kloe's distant ancestor. Celeste explains that the Lord of Phantasma has taken over Phantasma and urges the group to stop him. Finally, the party finds the last two yellow sealing stones, unexpectedly containing Richard, former head of Liberl's Intelligence Division, and Renne, an Ouroboros Enforcer who took part in the Gospel experiments but deserted as a result of Estelle showing her kindness. Since the events of Sky SC, Richard has turned over a new leaf, resigning from the army and now working as the head of his own intelligence agency R&A. Renne, on the other hand, remains hostile towards the party due to her being a member of Ouroboros. Nevertheless, she reluctantly agrees to work with the party to escape Phantasma.
Throughout the game at the beginning of each chapter, the player is treated to flashbacks of Kevin's past. When Kevin was a young boy, he was homeless. He was eventually found on the streets by a young Ries and her older sister, Rufina Argent, also a church knight. The two sisters adopt him and as he grows up, he too becomes a squire under the Septian Church. At some point in time, Rufina lost her life during a mission, although the circumstances of her death remain unclear. This tragic turn of events forces Kevin into a state of depression, and without hesitation accepts an offer from his superior to be a Dominion, one of the highest ranking church knights.
Back to the present, the Lord of Phantasma makes himself known to the party. He taunts the party with ominous warnings, especially to Kevin. At one point in the fourth plane, a demon summoned by the Lord of Phantasma proves to be too strong for the party. This forces Kevin to activate his ultimate power known as a Stigma to vanquish the demon. Unfortunately, this act places a great deal of physical strain on Kevin and he collapses, thus becoming temporarily unplayable for a short portion of the game.
On the sixth plane, the party finds themselves in more recreations of familiar areas. They are forced to fight recreations of previous allies and villains, such as the Enforcers of Ouroboros and even Cassius Bright himself. Conquering each hurdle, the party eventually comes face to face with Schwarzritter. After defeating him, it is revealed that Schwarzritter is none other than a recreation of Loewe. Joshua comes to term with his death and makes peace with the situation.
Kevin and Ries finally find themselves in a recreation of the orphanage they used to grow up in. Kevin finally reveals the truth behind Rufina's death. Many years ago, Kevin found out that the orphanage was under attack by a group of jaegers and that they are holding Ries hostage. Kevin decides to engage the jaegers alone without waiting for Rufina's assistance. It turns out that an artifact was stored beneath the orphanage and the jaegers were trying to obtain it. One of the jaegers used the artifact to transform himself into a monster. It was at this moment that Kevin activated his Stigma for the first time and he easily killed the jaeger. Unfortunately, this also made Kevin bloodthirsty, unable to tell friend from foe. As Kevin was about to kill Ries, Rufina arrived in time and allowed herself to be killed by Kevin, and he reverted back to his normal self. This is the reason why Kevin is so reluctant to use his Stigma unless absolutely necessary.
Back in the present, Ries chastises Kevin for not revealing the truth to her all this time. The Lord of Phantasma makes another appearance and Kevin successfully deduces his true identity, being none other than a recreation of Rufina herself. Kevin reveals that ever since he killed Rufina, he has been trying to find a way to punish himself for it and he allows the Lord of Phantasma to send him to the seventh plane, a recreation of Gehenna (the Trails universe's version of Hell). Ries jumps in after him and encourages him to make amends and come to peace with his dark past. Kevin and Ries defeat a recreation of Weissmann, and soon after the other protagonists arrive to break the two of them out of the seventh plane.
In the final chapter of the game, the Lord of Phantasma personally challenges the party to defeat her in a castle known as Phantasmagoria. As the whole party makes their way there, Gilbert offers to aid the party by serving as a distraction against the castle's defenses. Finally, Kevin and Ries reach the Lord of Phantasma. Kevin finds out that the Lord of Phantasma is not a recreation of Rufina, but a copy of his own Stigma. The Lord of Phantasma transforms into its true form but is eventually defeated. Kevin and Ries come to terms with Rufina's death.
With the Lord of Phantasma defeated, Phantasma slowly starts to crumble. Fortunately, Celeste opens a door that will allow the party to go back to the real world. As the characters (including Gilbert) bid goodbye to one another, Renne struggles to understand why they are so happy even though it may be the last time seeing each other. Estelle and Joshua respond by saying that this is what gives them hope; hope that they may see each other once again and that they consider Renne as a friend. Renne vehemently denies it and leaves as well, but not before admitting that she does truly love Estelle and Joshua. Kevin and Ries are the last two to leave Phantasma, and they promise to stay close to one another no matter how hard the future will be, and the game ends.
In a post-credits scene, Kevin (known by his Dominion title the Heretic Hunter) informs his superior that he plans to change his Dominion title (revealed in a later Trails game to be the Thousand Hand Guardian, as it pays a homage to Rufina's Dominion title).
The game also features a large number of Doors, optional areas the player may choose to enter. The doors contain supplementary story content that expands upon various plot points brought up in previous games, and introduces some story elements expanded upon in later games.
Development[edit]
The first Trails in the Sky was initially planned to be released as one singular game, but the size and scope grew so much that Falcom had to either pare down the game, or split it up.[2] They chose the latter, and eventually split it into two parts, First Chapter and Second Chapter. Development later started on an epilogue, which became the 3rd.[2] While the first two entries focused on the more upbeat adventures of Estelle and Joshua, the 3rd shifted its focus on telling a darker story.[2]
Localization[edit]
After First Chapter's successful launch on Windows, Xseed Games showed renewed interest in localization of the 3rd, contingent on the success of Second Chapter. In 2013, Xseed partnered with translation company Carpe Fulgur to translate Second Chapter; the 3rd's release largely hinged on its success.[3] Ken Berry, Vice President of Xseed Games, stated that despite having the right to release the 3rd, they would be willing to allow others to translate them as well due to them being such large undertakings.[4][5]
Release[edit]
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd was initially released in Japan for Microsoft Windows on June 28, 2007. A port for the PlayStation Portable was released in Japan on July 24, 2008. A high definition port for the PlayStation 3 was released in Japan on June 27, 2013.[1] A remaster, The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the Third Evolution, was released in Japan for the PlayStation Vita on July 14, 2016. An English localization of Trails in the Sky the 3rd by Xseed Games was released worldwide for Windows on May 3, 2017.[6][7][8]
In 2011, publisher Aeria Games announced a mobile version of the Trails in the Sky series for North America, with additional social interactions features. However, no details have been released since the initial announcement.[9] Xseed said that they had no connection to the potential Aeria Games release.[10]

3D Vision fixes for The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky series (all three games). The fix needs dgVoodoo to convert DX8 into DX11, instead of using the DX9 version which has some issues.
Update (2018-03-17): updated 3Dmigoto to version 1.3.6. All three fixes updated with the knowledge I got with Cold Steel 2 to completely fix HUD problems when it's at depth (regarding its background image).
Update (2018-01-17): updated 3Dmigoto to version 1.2.69, fixed geometry elements being affected by HUD depth, and added fixes for the other two games. All in one post because installation instructions are the same.
Update (2017-12-09): updated 3Dmigoto to version 1.2.67, which has better CPU performance. No other changes.
Important warning:dgVoodoo causes video movies (logo, opening and ending, for example) to not play. Instead the game will show a skippable black screen, so it's easy to identify. Use the DX9 version of the games for those moments.
Fixed
- Stereoized picture in pause menus.
- Some elements that were wrongfully in 2D in DX9 are in 3D in DX11.
- One haloing effect in TitS the 3rd, that at least appears at the start of the game.
Known issues
- In the second game, casino minigames will display only in one eye, and also portraits of fish you get with the rod.
