If you liked the previous games then you will like Deer Hunter 2005. This is a series that started from very modest beginnings and quickly become a massive hit on the PC in the 2000s. This 2005 edition may have had a rough launch, but eventually, it was patched enough to where it became a solid entry in the series.

Three Modes of Play

You have three main game modes that you can sink your teeth into. If you just want to jump straight in and have fun hunting then the Daily Hunt mode is for you. Deer Hunter 2005 also introduced a tournament mode that you can play with bots. This is what you would expect where you are competing against the AI for who can get the most and best kills in a given time frame.

The other mode is Hunting Season where you actually get to manage a deer herd where you take care of them, plant the crops, and thin out the ones that are not good enough for you. It is a pretty cool idea and a mode later games would improve upon.

Where Do You Want To Go?

You have some great locations to hunt in here. Texas, Michigan, Idaho, Montana, British Columbia, and Mexico (as well as a New York shooting range) all have their own distinct style and feel huge. There is a great selection of deer for you to hunt down as well as some larger prey if you are willing to do the leg work, but these are much, much harder to come by so that can be a tad on the frustrating side if you ask me.

Locked & Loaded

Deer Hunter 2005 does not mess around when it comes to your gear. There is a great selection of guns that you can use, you can actually take two with you on a hunt which I liked. You also have a range of gear such as calls, scents, and bait to try and lure an animal to just where you want them. The core gameplay has really not changed much at all and that is probably the biggest criticism that you could throw this games way. While what is here is fine, there is just not enough new content to make it stand out from the previous game.

Where is My Play the Deer?

There is multiplayer on offer here, but they took out Play the Deer mode which was awesome! It was by far my favorite multiplayer mode in the previous game and I have no idea why they would have taken it away from this game. Seeing who is the best hunter with your buddies is fun, but it is such a strange decision to take out a mode that was so popular.

Overall, Deer Hunter 2005 is a decent enough entry in the series. It just felt like they were running out of ideas with this one or that they just wanted to get a new game out on the shelves as quickly as they could. I would not say that they flat out phoned this one in, but it certainly lacked the spark that the previous games had.

Pros:

  • There is a great arsenal of hunting weapons
  • I liked how different each location was
  • While slim, there is a chance to hunt more powerful animals
  • The tournament mode was kind of fun
  • It is still a fun hunting experience overall

Cons:

  • They took out my favorite multiplayer mode
  • Not much innovation over the 4th game at all
Overall rating: 7
